What problem this solves
Designers pick a fabric or wallpaper from a sample book, fall in love, and the install disappoints. The pattern is either too dense (overwhelming on the wall) or too sparse (lost). The fix is rarely “buy a different pattern” — it’s usually choosing a different repeat size, or shifting to a different application (one wall, headboard, ceiling).
Who it’s for
- Designers selecting wallpaper or feature fabric
- Renovators checking if a curtain pattern will overwhelm the window
- Anyone who has installed a pattern and been unhappy with the result
Limitations
- Repeat may be irregular (e.g. half-drop damask) — the calculator uses the larger dimension
- Pattern density (motif % of background) is separate from repeat size
- Visual density varies with motif complexity; simple dots read lighter than dense florals
- Sample book lighting vs room lighting changes perceived scale
